Track conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway continue to make radical improvements, with most riders slashing another second off their times in the third session of free practice for the MotoGP class. Casey Stoner was once again the fastest man on the circuit, the Repsol Honda rider getting into the mid-1'39s by the halfway mark in the session. Stoner was the second man to get into the 1'39s, the first being Ben Spies, the factory Yamaha rider continuing to excel at the Indy circuit. Spies ended the session just over a tenth behind Stoner, and over two tenths faster than Stoner's teammate Dani Pedrosa, the Spaniard the final rider to get into the 1'39 bracket.
Marco Simoncelli won the battle of the remaining factory-backed Hondas, the San Carlo Gresini man finishing a couple of hundredths of a second ahead of Repsol rider Andrea Dovizioso. Monster Tech 3 Yamaha's Colin Edwards secured yet another top 6 spot, impressing by finishing ahead of reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo, the Spaniard ending FP3 down in 7th, just over a second behind his main rival for the 2011 crown. Valentino Rossi was a tenth behind Lorenzo on the Marlboro Ducati, and two tenths ahead of Pramac Ducati man Randy de Puniet, while Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top 10 on the Rizla Suzuki, just ahead of the second Marlboro Ducati rider Nicky Hayden.
